A rate is a rtio, a comparison of two numbers.

If two apples can be purchased for 16 cents, we can write either:

  • 65 miles per hour  65 miles1 hour\frac{65\ miles}{1\ hour}

  • 25 miles per gallon 25 miles1 gallon\frac{25\ miles}{1\ gallon}
