Writing Inequalities

  • Look for your key words: Box them

  • Look for your numbers: Circle them

  • Look for your variable: Underline them

  • Ex:

  •  x is at most 30

  • x < 30

Fill in the Blank

Write the inequality:

2 is less than x plus 5

8

Practice:

In order to be admitted for a certain ride at an amusement park, a child must be greater than or equal to 36 inches tall. Write an inequality to match.

9

Multiple Choice

Write the Inequality.

Sam makes at most $25 dollars a day. If she is paid $2.25 per hour, write an inequality to determine the number of hours she works.

1

2.25h > 25

2

2.25h < 25

3

2.25h > 25

4

2.25h < 25

Solving One-Step Inequalities

  • Treat inequalities like equations. You want to get the variable by itself by using inverse operations.

  • Ex 1: 3 + m > 15

  • Subtract 3 to both sides

  • m > 12

  • Ex 2: 4x < 64

  • Divided both sides by 4

  • x < 16

11

Multiple Choice

Solve the Inequality:

m - 10 < 30

1

m = 40

2

m < 40

3

m = 20

4

m < 20
