Combining Like Terms

Sometimes you will need to combine like terms before solving. Let's look at an example:



 3y  8y = 253y\ -\ 8y\ =\ 25  

Combine like terms: 3y and -8y

 5y=25-5y=25    -->    y=5y=-5

Here is another example:

 4\ +\ 4n\ =\ -2n\ -2  


Combine constants and like terms

 6 + 4n = 2n6\ +\ 4n\ =\ -2n   -->    6 = 6n6\ =\ -6n  

Now divide both sides by the coefficient:  -6

 n = 1n\ =\ -1
