2

When matter is heated...

  • Changing from a solid to a liquid is MELTING.

  • Changing from a liquid to gas is BOILING or EVAPORATION

  • Boiling is adding heat to a liquid to make it bubble by adding energy from the heat creating a water vapor.

  • Evaporation is letting the liquid turn to water vapor by sunlight or natural means.

3

When matter is cooled...

  • Changing from a gas to a liquid is called CONDENSATION.

  • Changing from a liquid to a solid is called FREEZING.

  • This occurs because the particles slow down due to having less energy.

  • When water freezes it gets bigger or expands. This allows ice to float and stay above the water, so the living things can survive under the ice.

Physical Changes

  • A change is the way matter looks.

  • A change is size, shape or form of matter.

  • Changes of states are always physical changes.

10

Mixtures

  • It's a physical change.

  • Easily separated.

  • Think about a salad, spaghetti and meatballs or vegetable soup.

11

Solutions

  • A mixture where one matter is mixed EVENLY with another matter.

  • Solutions can be made from liquids (salt water), solids (brass) and gases (air we breathe)

  • Solutions can be seaparated by using evaporation.

12

More examples of Separating Mixtures and Solutions

  • Using sink or float properties to separate matter.

  • Using a filter to separate solids from liquids or large solids from small solids.

  • Using a magnet to separate metals from non-metals.

Chemical Changes

  • Causes a new matter to form with different properties than the original matter.

  • Very common everyday. Metals rusts, food is digested, photosynthesis, cooking food.

  • Can not be reversed

  • Signs of a chamical change: Light and heat, formation of a gas, natural color change.
