Health Disparities

Health disparities are preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations.

Disparities in IMR: Infant Mortality Rate (how many babies die before age 1)

  • Infant mortality among whites ranges from 2.52 per 100,000 in DC to 7.04 per 100,000 in Arkansas;

  • among blacks, the range is 8.27 per 100,000 in Massachusetts to 14.28 per 100,000 in Wisconsin.
