What is the difference between speed and velocity?

3

Velocity

includes the speed of an object and the direction of its motion.

4

Poll

Which of these would you say is what happens during acceleration?

An object's motion increases in velocity

An object's motion decreases in velocity

An object's motion increases in speed and/or changes direction

An object's motion decreases in speed and/or changes in direction

5

Acceleration is

the rate of change in velocity; acceleration occurs when there is a change in an object's speed, direction, or velocity.

6

How to calculate Acceleration:

Acceleration (meters/second2) =
change in velocity (meters/second) / time (seconds)

*Note: A change in velocity = final velocity - initial velocity

 Δv=vfvi\Delta v=v_f-v_i

7

Positive Acceleration

Example: An airplane takes off...

a=vf-vi/t = (80m/s - 0m/s)/20s

a=4m/s2

The plane is speeding up so the acceleration is positive

8

Negative Acceleration

Example: A bike comes to a stop

a= (vf-vi)/t = (0m/s - 3m/s)/2s

a= -1.5m/s2

The bike is slowing down so acceleration is negative

Multiple Choice

At what speed would a car have to move in order to travel 20 kilometers in 2 hours.

1

5 km/hr

2

10 km/hr

3

20 km/hr

4

40 km/hr

11

Multiple Choice

What is your acceleration if you are riding your bike at 9 km/hr, and 10 minutes later your speed is 6 km/hr.

1

0.3 km/hr

2

30 km/hr

3

0.3 km/hr/hr

4

300 km/hr

12

Multiple Choice

You are riding your bike at 9 km/h. Ten minutes later, your speed is 6 km/h.
1
Acceleration occurred because speed increased.
2
Acceleration occurred because speed decreased.
3
Acceleration occurred because you changed directions.
