What is a Complete sentence?

  • A complete sentence is a sentence that is a complete thought

  • All complete sentences have at minimum 3 things

What do all complete sentences have?

  • Subject

  • Verb

  • Object

Subject

  • The subject of the sentence is who the sentence is about

  • The subject is a noun or a pronoun (ex. I, he, she)

  • Examples of subject: Butterfly, King, Venus

  • The object of a sentence is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb. It is the who or what that the subject does something to.

  • If we take the sentence "Terry carried out the trash" then trash is the object in the sentence"

  • I is the subject of the sentence, the subject is who the sentence is about

  • ate is the verb in the sentence, a verb is an action word that the subject does

More complex complete sentences

  • We can create more complex complete sentences

  • For example I could write: John was late to work.

  • This sentence is not very complex and is very simple, so there are things we can do to make it more complex

  • How can we make this more complex?

  • Can we expand on this sentence any more?

  • How about if we explained why John was late for work

  • Instead of writing "John was late for work" we wrote something like "John was late for work because he woke up late."
