Modal Auxiliary: What Does It Mean & Do?

Modal means mood, and auxiliary means help or support. Modal auxiliary verbs modify the main verb in a sentence. They are words that help verbs express a particular mood or time.

1. Probability - It might rain tomorrow.

2. Possibility - I might go on the field trip.

Must can be used to show:

1. Obligations - You must keep that safe.

2. Restrictions - You must not be rude.

3. Strong Certainty - You must be tired.

Should

Should can be used to show:

1. Advice - You should bring some sunscreen.

2. Conclusion - The hurricane should weaken by tomorrow.

Would

Would can be used to show:

1. Polite Request - Would you like to have dinner with us?

2. Preference - I would prefer a piece of fruit cake.

Will

Will can be used to show:

1. Predictions - He will probably see Jane in Connecticut.

2. Invitations/Offers - Will you like to join us for lunch today?
