  • born 1685 in Eisenach, went to school in about 1692

  • orphaned in 1695 and went to live with his brother J. C. Bach (former pupil of Pachel) in Orduf (his older brother prob taught him keyboard)

  • became a schoolboy chorister at Michaelskirche Luneberg in 1700

  • employed in the Duke of Weimar's orchestra 1703, followed quickly by post of organist in Arnstadt later that year and where he stayed until 1707

  • moved to Mulhausen in June 1707 and married

  • only stayed 2 years before returning to Weimar in 1709 to become court organist

  • became court musical director in Cothen 1717, his wife passed away in 1720

  • remarried 1721, moved to Leipzig in 1723

  • Weimar 1708-1717: employed as an organist and wrote much of his organ music during this period (Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, The Little Organ Book, Passacaglia in C Minor, 8 Little Preludes and Fugues, Toccata in C Major, 100s of Chorale Preludes, Fantasias and Fugues

  • Coethen 1717-1723: employed as kappellmeister and wrote much of his instrumental music here (6 sonatas and partitas for solo vioin, 6 solo cello suites, 6 French suites for keyboard, 6 English suites for keyboard, 6 Partitas for keyboard, Book I of the Well-tempered Klavier, 6 Brandenburg Concerti, Double Violin Concerto in D Minor, Violin concerto in E Major, Violin Concerto in A minor

  • Leipzig 1723-1750: employed at St. Thomas' Church and wrote most of his church music here (Mass in B Minor, St Matthew Passion, St John Passion, Christmas Oratorio)

  • English Baroque composer born into a musical family: father was a musician and his younger brother was also a prolific composer who wrote much of the music for The Indian Queen after Purcell's death.

  • after his father died, Purcell became a chorister at the Chapel Royal until his voice broke. He then became an assistant organ builder.

  • one of his teachers was Matthew Locke who was also an opera composer.

  • Earliest work: Ode for the King's birthday (1670)

  • At 17, he went to the Westminster School where he was a copyist. He wrote some music for theatre.

  • In 1679 he became organist of Westminster Abbey where he mostly wrote sacred music. He also composed the opera Dido and Aneas.

  • 1682: became organist at the Chapel Royal as well. Wrote many odes and anthems addreessed to the King and the Royal Family (I was glad, and My Heart is Inditing)
