Pogo was a clown in a circus. Every day he rode an elephant. Her name was Mabel.

At last Pogo got too old to be a clown. He had to leave the circus. He was very sad. He didn't want to leave Mabel.

Maybe I can buy Mabel, Pogo thought. Then I can take her with me.

3

Pogo went to see Mr. James. He owned the circus. "Could I buy Mabel?" Pogo asked.

"I'm sorry," Mr. James said. "I can't sell her."

Pogo was very sad.

That night Pogo went to Mabel's tent. He went to say goodbye.

All at once the lights went on. There were all Pogo's friends.

4

"Surprise!" they shouted.

And there was Mabel. She was wearing a sign. It said TO POGO.

Mr. James said, "This is why I couldn't sell Mabel to you, Pogo. Your friends bought her for you."

Pogo said, "What a fine surprise!" Mabel didn't say anything. She just winked one little eye.
