Starter:

Make a list of all the different tasks you can complete on a computer.

If you can, try to name the type of software you use to complete the task

Types of Software

• There are three main types of software we use on a computer, these are:

• Applications Software

• Utility Software

• Systems Software

Different Software Names

When discussing the names of different software you should never name brand names.

For example - what software would you use to create a letter?

The answer would be a word processor the brand of word processor could be Microsoft Word.

Utility Software

Utilities software is another type of software. These pieces of software complete one single task to maintain your computer.

The three categories of utility software are:

System Maintenance

For each category of utility software (computer security, disk organisation, system maintenance) create a worksheet which:

Gives two expamples of tasks completed in each category

Explain how each of the categories works

Find a branded example for each task utility software completes
