What does it mean to refute a claim?
When you refute a claim, you are disagreeing with it. You are telling the person they are wrong and here is why.

What does a refute look like?
Original Claim: Students should have homework because it helps them practice what they learned.
Refute Sentence: Although teachers think students need homework to practice, not all students need the practice if they understand the lesson in class.
