Quadratic Function

  • Standard form:  y=ax2+bx +cy=ax^2+bx\ +c  

     Vertex (b2a, output), Axis of symmetry: x = b2aVertex\ \left(-\frac{b}{2a},\ output\right),\ Axis\ of\ symmetry:\ x\ =\ -\frac{b}{2a}  

  • Vertex form:  y=a(xh)2+ky=a\left(x-h\right)^2+k  ; Vertex (h, k),                             Axis of symmetry: x = h

  • Quadratic formula:  x=(b±b24ac)(2a)x=\frac{\left(-b\pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac}\right)}{\left(2a\right)}  

  • Completing the square:  x2+bx+(b2)2x^2+bx+\left(\frac{b}{2}\right)^2  

  • When a is +, it is concave up or opens up.

  • When a is negative, it is concave down or opens down.
