Multiplying Binomials using FOIL

  • FOIL stands for Firsts, Outsides, Insides, Lasts (sometimes this is called double distribution since you take the first term and distribute to the second binomial and then take the second term and distribute to the second binomial)

  • Here is an example: (2x - 9)(x + 3)

  • = 2x(x) + 2x(3) - 9(x) - 9(3)

  • = 2x2 + 6x - 9x -27 (now combine like terms)

  • = 2x2 - 3x - 27
