Rock Cycle

2
Types of Rocks
There are three types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
These are formed differently than one another and have identifiable characteristics.
3
Igneous Rocks
These rocks are formed from cooling lava and magma.
The lava and magma cool forming solid and crystallizing.
If it cools underground, it is called intrusive.
If it cools above ground, it is called extrusive.
4
Properties of Igneous Rocks
Include more than 1 mineral
Can be glassy or coarse
Large crystals if cooled slowly

How would you describe igneous rocks?
9
Sedimentary Rocks
These rocks are formed by the build up of sediments (weathered rocks) or fossils.
The sediments and fossils are pushed together or become cemented in water.
They can display many layers or the individual parts that make the rock.
10
Properties of Sedimentary Rocks
Includes pieces of other rocks or living things.
Layers are possible due to deposition
Fossils are most commonly found in these types of rocks.

How would you describe sedimentary rocks?
15
Metamorphic Rocks
These rocks are formed in areas of high temperature and pressure changes.
The crystals are in the rock are changed and form a new rock.
16
Properties of Metamorphic Rocks
Located deep in the Earth's crust
Commonly seen with zigzags or stripes due to squishing and squeezing
Wide range of luster, color, density, and minerals
Unique minerals located in these type of rock

21
Rock Cycle
This is the process on Earth that recycles matter into new matter.
Rocks are always moving in this cycle.
The path may change depending on the conditions.
