Natives of Hawaii

Native people of Hawaii have their own culture, usually referred to as Polynesian culture. Polynesian describes people who live on islands in the Pacific ocean, which there are more than 1000 of them. These natives settled in Hawaii and lived isolated for over 500 years.

  • In 1820 white missionaries, for the first time, arrived in Hawaii to spread Christianity to the native peoples.

  • The U.S. also leases Pearl Harbor as a naval base in 1887
