What is a rate?

  • A rate is a ratio with two different units

  • Examples: Speed is a rate. We compare distance to time

  • 350 miles in 3 hours

  • You may also see rates at the grocery store

Think of an example of a rate you may have seen before and share it!

Okay, so what is a unit rate?

  • A unit rate is a rate with a denominator of 1

  • For speed, a unit rate would be 25 miles to 1 hour

  • When we talk about unit rates, we see the word "per"

  • If we are talking about how much something costs, we call it unit price

How do we find unit rates?

  • We use the given rate to set up equivalent ratios, with a denominator of 1

  • For example, if a student reads book that is 320 pages long in 8 days, and we want to know how many pages they read PER day, we set up our rates like this:

     pagesdays  3208= ?1\frac{pages}{days\ }\ \frac{320}{8}=\ \frac{?}{1}

  • We would divide the top and bottom by the same number (8) to find out how many pages are read in 1 day

This will make more sense as we work through examples!

  • So, let's get to our notes!
