Educational - about learning

Technology - digital tools, apps, and devices

Vocabulary - language; words used about a specific topic

  • Colloquial definition

  • Dictionary definition

  • Used in a sentence

Asynchronous

  • On your own time (synchronized means at the same time or together, the prefix a means not that)

  • (of two or more objects or events) not existing or happening at the same time

  • "Monday's class will be asynchronous since our schedules don't align"

Distance Education

  • Learning remotely (from another location)

  • While often synonymous with online education, distance learning is a much older concept; in the 19th century, it existed via the postal service.

  • "If we can't meet in the classroom we'll learn about integers with Distance Education"

Download

  • Put a file onto your own device

  • Copy (data) from one computer system to another, typically over the internet.

  • "If you need a Periodic Table you can download a picture of one to your phone"

Gamification

  • Learning while playing games

  • The application of typical elements of game playing (e.g. point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity, typically as an online marketing technique to encourage engagement with a product or service

  • "Using Kahoot is one example of gamifying tests"

Manipulatives

  • (Typically used with Math) objects that can be used to model and/or represent an idea

  • An object which is designed so that a learner can perceive some mathematical concept by manipulating it

  • "During the pandemic we can't use manipulatives but you can model this equation with any object at home"

Screen time

  • Amount of time spent looking at a screen

  • Any time children spend in front of televisions, computers, phones, video games, or other electronic devices

  • "While we learn online we need to be wary of our screen time"

  • Put something online

  • Transfer (data) from one computer to another, typically to one that is larger or remote from the user or functioning as a server.

  • "Upload your work to the Google Classroom when you've finished"
