The Solar System Part 1

2
Indiana Science Standards
6.ESS.3 Compare and contrast the Earth, its moon, and other planets in the solar system, including comets and asteroids. (Comparisons should be made in regard to size, surface features, atmospheric characteristics, and the ability to support life.)
3
I can...
Explain the major early theories about the center of the cosmos and what they mean.
4
Multiple Choice
Review: What is the doppler effect?
Something that shows weather
The change in light and sound as something comes towards and away from something else
A device that measures light
5
Multiple Select
The Big Bang Theory says (mark all that apply):
The universe is expanding
The universe revolves around the sun
The matter in the universe began as a small extremely dense object that exploded
A TV Show
6
Our Solar System
The center of our solar system is the sun, which is a star.
All of the planets, their moons, the 3 known dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, rocks dust and gas that orbit the sun are all part of the solar system
Our solar system only has one star though.
7
Orbit
the path any object in space takes as it goes around another
8
Ancient Ideas
Ancient people noticed how the Sun, moon and starts seemed to rotate around the earth, which made it seem as if the Earth was the center of the universe
However, 5 particul things didn't follow the patterns, but seemed to wander, these the Greeks called planets, which means wanderers.
9
Ptolemy's Ideas
Around the year 150 Ptolemy published a map of the universe. He believed the Earth was at the center of the universe, with the Sun, the moon, the stars, and the planets revolving around it. This idea is a geocentric system of looking at the universe.
10
Geocentric System
The belief that the Earth is the system of the universe
11
The Copernican View
Astronomers kept working on Ptolemy's system to make it make sense with their observations
In the mid 1500's Nicolaus Copernicus, a Polish astronomer and Mathematician found that if he put the sun in the center, things made more sense. This is known as a heliocentric way of viewing the world
12
Brahe and Kepler
Brahe was a Danish astronomer who collected data on the movement of heavenly bodies in the early 1600s
Johannes Keplar was a German Astronomer who ended up becoming Brahe's assistant. He believed in the Copernican heliocentric idea.
13
Johannes Kepler and his Laws
After observing Mars for a decade, Kepler concluded that Mars did not orbit in a circle, but rather in an elipses (an oval?)
Kepler's first Law: the paths of planets are ellipses.
Kepler's 2nd Law: Planets speed up when they're closer to the sun (but why...).
14
Multiple Choice
What was Ptolemy's idea about the solar system?
Heliocentrism
Geocentrism
Ge-Heliocentrism
Kepler's 1st Law
15
Multiple Choice
What was Copernicas's idea about the solar system?

the sun
space dust
comets
other stars
