Rules for commas
When using a FANBOY or Awubis words
Complex sentence (independent clause and dependent clause with a comma)
interrupter, appositive, question tag, direct address
when using quotation marks
If using a year or day of the week

Examples of FANBOYS or Awubis
The bell has rung, for the class is now over.
I love to eat satsumas, and my neighbor brought me a huge bag of them.
I didn't feel like waking up, nor did I want to get out of my covers.
I wanted to eat donuts, but they are unhealthy for me.
You can come over to my house, or we can go to yours.
I wanted to stay, yet I wanted to go.
Mom is here, so let's hurry and finish our chores!

Quotation Marks
If it begins with a quote, put a comma after the quotation marks. Example: "Don't run in the hallway!", yelled Mrs. B.
If the quote is in the middle, surround it with commas. Example: I heard him say, "You are ridiculous", right before he closed the door.
If the quote is at the end, put a comma right before it. Example: I stopped before she whispered. "Love you, mommy!"
