Differences Between Adverb and Adjective Clauses

  • Adverb clauses modify a verb, adjective, or adverb while adjective clauses modify a noun.

  • Adverb clauses start with a subordinating conjunction (AWUBIS) while adjective clauses start with relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, that, which) and relative adverbs (when, where, why)

Adverb vs. Adjective Clauses

  • Adverb: You watch a movie after you brush your teeth. (This is answering the question of when you can watch- which is a verb)

  • Adjective: The student, who was late to class, received a tardy slip. (This is describing the student, which is a noun)
