Today we will pick up with the Judiciary Review

Judiciary Act of 1801
Before Jefferson took office, Federalist passed an Act that set up a system of courts.
John Adams used this to appoint people in his last days in office.
Congress was still under Federalist control and supported Adam’s choices which blocked Jefferson from making any choices.

What were the midnight judges?
This was the name given to the 16 judges that were added by the Judiciary Act of 1801.
They were called this because Adams signed their appointments late on the last day of his administration.
Adams did this as a way to preserve Federalist ruling in the federal government while Jefferson was in office

Adam’s appointees could not take effect until the “midnight judges” received the commissions
Jefferson became president before these commissions were received. He told Madison not to deliver them

The area west of the river was the Louisiana Territory which belonged to Spain.
Americans moved west for new land and adventure.
Pioneers (mostly farmers) took long journeys across mountains and muddy roads.

The Spanish controlled the area but allowed the Americans to use it.
