When we look at the way characters behave in a story, it helps us to understand the story better. Today, we will look at the way characters respond to big challanges.

Esperanza
First, I want to think about the character of Esperanza. In paragraph 32, she is angry about the challenge of her new life and lashes out at Miguel. She doesn't understand why he is not angry himself.

Miguel
Next, I will think about the character of Miguel. He is facing the same challenge of a new life in America, but the new life is not much different from his old life. In paragraph 34, I read that he sees the chance to make a better life. He adapts when new challenges are thrown at him. He urges Esperanza to be patient.

How do their reactions to the problem differ?
When I think about these two characters and their responses, I begin to understand the bigger ideas the author wants me to think about. I wonder which response—anger or patience—will get better results.
