What we need to know about earthquakes

• Earthquakes often happen on or near the earth's tectonic plates.

• Earthquakes can be very dangerous, but others might just be a little rumble.

• Earthquakes can help to cause volcanoes and tsunamis.

• Earthquakes have no warning like hurricanes do.

• Animals can sense when earthquakes are about to happen because they can feel the vibrations at from inside of the earth.

The Great Chile earthquake (2010)

• This was a very severe earthquake that occurred on February 27, 2010.

• It was off the coast of south-central Chile. It caused widespread damage on land.

• The earthquake caused a tsunami that devastated some coastal areas of the country.

• Together, the earthquake and tsunami were responsible for more than 500 deaths.
