Given Circumstances

  • The given circumstances of a play can be described as the specific conditions in which the action of the play occurs.

  • Given circumstances describe the time, place, and society within the play.

  • Time has 3 aspects: (1) when the play was written, (2) when the play is set, and (3) how much time passes during the course of the play

  • Place describes the physical environment in which the play is set- it can describe general location (like neighborhoods) or specific location (notated in stage directions)

  • Society describes the the closed social system of the play, which influences the characters' thinking and behavior-- things like family, occupation, social standards, economics, politics and religion.

  • The cumulative effect of ALL the given circumstances (time, place, society) created the world of the play.
