You decide...

1. Are volcanoes nature's most terrifying force?

2. Should people live in areas prone to volcanic eruptions?

3. How would you prepare for a volcanic eruption?

5

Let's recap from last lesson

5 Quick Questions - You have 30 seconds to answer each question

6

Multiple Select

Which TWO major lines of latitiude run though South America?

1

Tropic of Cancer

2

Antartic Circle

3

Topic of Capricorn

4

Equator

5

Arctic Circle

7

Multiple Choice

What is the solid layer at the centre of the earth called?

1

Inner core

2

Mantle

3

Outer core

4

Crust

8

Multiple Choice

What is the name of the thickest layer of the earth?

1

Inner Core

2

Outer Core

3

Mantle

4

Crust

9

Multiple Choice

What is the outermost layer of the earth broken into?

1

Seismic plates

2

Volcanic plates

3

Tectonic plates

4

Dinner plates

10

Open Ended

What causes the tectonic plates to move? (*hint, two words)

11

Slide image

What are volcanoes, and how are they formed?

12

Open Ended

Write down what you already know about volcanoes - Can you describe how a volcano is formed?

13

What happens when the plates of the earth move?

14

Slide image

What do you think will happen when two plates meet?

15

Multiple Choice

What is the area called where two tectonic plates meet?

1

Tectonic belt

2

Plate joint

3

Plate edge

4

Plate boundary

16

Multiple Select

Three of these are a type of plate boundary, which ones?

1

Destructive Plate Boundary

2

Diversive Plate Boundary

3

Constructive Plate Boundary

4

Conservative Plate Boundary

5

Liberal Plate Boundary

17

Multiple Select

What are the two types of tectonic plate?

1

Continental

2

Geological

3

Oceanic

4

Atlantic

18

Destructive Plate Boundary

  • Two plates move together and one is destroyed.

  • The 'friction' can cause earthquakes

  • The 'subducted' plate will melt in the mantle

  • The magma will rise through the cracks in the earths crust to form a cone shaped volcano

19

Multiple Choice

Which tectonic plate is subducted at a destructive plate boundary?

1

Continental

2

Oceanic

20

Multiple Choice

If the volcano is made of thick and sticky magma, what shape will it be, and what sort of eruption will take place?

1

Rounded and very powerful

2

Conical and gentle

3

Rounded and gentle

4

Conical and very powerful

21

Composite Volcano

  • Large conical shape

  • Composed of layers

  • Lava produced is very thick and sticky (high viscosity)

  • Lava and rock stick together

  • Pressure increases before an eruption

Case Study: Ecuador

Ecuador is a country in the north-west part of South America.

The Nazca plate is moving towards the South American plate.

What kind of plate boundary is this creating? answer in the chatbox on the google classroom.

Slide image

23

Open Ended

Why might there be lots of tall mountains in Ecuador?

and what problems might these mountains cause fot the people that live there?

24

Primary Effects

what happens first, directly from the natural disaster.

Slide image

25

Secondary Effects

what happens after, or the effects of the primary effects.

Slide image

26

Task: Create a Primary and Secondary effects table

Be ready to categorise the effects of the Tungurahua Volcano which erupted in Ecuador in 2014.

What happens when two plates move apart ?

30

Constructive Plate Boundary

  • Two plates are moving apart creating a gap

  • Magma flows out of the mantle and fills the gap

  • This cools and forms a ridge between the plates

  • Shield volcanoes will form here

Slide image

31

Shield Volcano

  • Wide and Shallow sided volcano

  • Much lower in height compared to a composite volcano

  • Will erupt more frequently

  • Formed when two tectonic plates move apart

  • Lava flows over long distances (upto 30km)

Slide image

32

Multiple Choice

The magma coming out of a shield volcano is very thin and runny.

Will the eruptions from shield volcanoes more or less powerful than a composite volcano?

1

More powerful

2

Less powerful

3

The same

33

Think....

What are the worst primary effects of a volcanic eruption?

Are these effects Economic, Environmental or Social?

Slide image

34

Open Ended

What might be the worst primary and secondary effects of a volcanic eruption? State your reasons why you think they are important. (Challenge: How might some one disagree with your opinion)

35

Multiple Choice

Which sentence is correct?

1

At a destructive plate boundary, the plates are moving apart. A shield volcano is formed. The eruptions are violent.

2

At a constructive plate boundary, the plates are moving apart. A shield volcano is formed, the eruptions are (not usually) violent.

36

What have we learnt today?

- Identified the different types of plate boundaries

- Learnt about the differet types of volcanoes that form at these plate boundaries

- Learnt about the differences between primary and secondary effects of volcanic eruptions
