The average/center point

Sum of the data ÷ # of data points

Example of mean

4, 5, 3, 1, 7, 4

1. Add up all the numbers:

4+5+3+1+7+4=24

2.Divide the sum by the total number of numbers (6 numbers)

24÷6=4

Median

The middle number in a set of data when the data are arranged in numerical order. If the data has an even number, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers.

Put numbers in order and find the middle number

Example of median with even set of numbers

1. Put the numbers in order

1, 3, 4, 5, 5, 7

2. With an even set of data there will be two numbers in the middle

4 and 5

3. Find the mean of those two numbers

4+5=9

9÷2=4.5

2. Cross off a number from each side until you reach the middle number.
