Egg
Pollen
Sperm
Tails
3
Multiple Choice
Where does the baby develop inside a woman?
Stomach
Uterus (womb)
Vagina
Intestines
4
Male sperm cells are much smaller than female egg cells
5
All of these features help the sperm and egg cells to carry out their jobs!
6
Sperm Cells
Tail: Helps the sperm to swim
Shape: Streamlined
Acrosome: Contains enzymes
Nucleus: Contains father's DNA
Mitochondria: Provide energy
7
Egg Cells
Nucleus: Contain's mother's DNA
Jelly coating: Protection
Large size: Sperm can find it easily
8
Multiple Select
Which of these apply to male sex cells in humans?
Contain enzymes
Are the largest sex cell
Have a tail
Have a nucleus
Have a protective jelly coating
9
Multiple Select
Which of these apply to female sex cells?
Contain a nucleus
Have lots of mitochondria
Have a protective jelly coating
Can swim
Have an acrosome

How are you feeling about this topic so far?
I've got this!!
I think I understand
I need to go through this again
Help!

Reproductive Systems
Around the room are fully labelled diagrams of reproductive organs.
In groups of three, nominate one person to write.
One other person will have 30 seconds to look at the labelled diagram and remember as much as possible.
Return to your desk and tell your scribe, who will write it down
Then the second person will go to look.
18
Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system is very complex
It needs to provide a safe place for a baby to develop
19
20
Female Reproductive System
Eggs are released from the ovary and travel along the oviduct (fallopian tube) to reach the uterus
If sperm are swimming up from the vagina and meets the egg, it will fertilise the egg
The egg will implant in the uterus (womb) and a baby will develop
The cervix will hold the baby inside the uterus as it grows
21
Male Reproductive System
The male reproductive system is responsible for producing sperm cells
22
23
Male Reproductive System
Sperm cells are produced in the testes located in the scrotum.
They travel up the sperm duct and down the urethra that runs through the middle of the penis to be released from the body.
The prostate gland adds extra fluid to the sperm cells to make it easier for them to swim.
The foreskin protects the head of the penis.
24
Multiple Select
Which of these are part of the female reproductive system?
Ovary
Scrotum
Cervix
Prostate
Oviduct
25

Poll
Now how do you feel about this topic?
I understand it!
I don't really get it
There are too many new words!
I don't get it at all!
31
THINK: How many sperm cells do you think are released from the testes at a time?
32
Open Ended
How many sperm cells do you think are released from the testes at one time? Why do you think that is?
33
Wow!
Between 80-300 million sperm cells are released at one time!
Most of these will die though and will not reach an egg cell to fertilise it!
So many are released to increase the chances of it meeting an egg cell
