2

What is inequality?

  • a mathematical sentence that contains the inequality symbol

  • an inequality describes a situation that has an infinite number of numerical possibilities.

3

What is an inequality symbol?

 < (less than), >(greater than), or =(equal to) <\ \left(less\ than\right),\ >\left(greater\ than\right),\ or\ =\left(equal\ to\right)\    OR (less than or equal to) and (greater than or equal to)OR\ \le\left(less\ than\ or\ equal\ to\right)\ and\ \ge\left(greater\ than\ or\ equal\ to\right)

4

What do we use inequalities for?

  • In 5th grade, you used inequalities to compare whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

  • In 6th grade, we will add on to our 5th grade knowledge and use inequalities to represent real-world situations.

  • In 7th grade, you will be able to write multi step inequalities to represent situations.

5

Example of inequalities we will be seeing

  •  X<12 X<12\   this inequality might be a representation of "children younger than 12 years old"

  • Whereas  X12X\le12  "children  12 years old or younger "
