What is inequality?

• a mathematical sentence that contains the inequality symbol

• an inequality describes a situation that has an infinite number of numerical possibilities.

What is an inequality symbol?

 $<\ \left(less\ than\right),\ >\left(greater\ than\right),\ or\ =\left(equal\ to\right)\$   $OR\ \le\left(less\ than\ or\ equal\ to\right)\ and\ \ge\left(greater\ than\ or\ equal\ to\right)$  

What do we use inequalities for?

• In 5th grade, you used inequalities to compare whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

• In 6th grade, we will add on to our 5th grade knowledge and use inequalities to represent real-world situations.

• In 7th grade, you will be able to write multi step inequalities to represent situations.

Example of inequalities we will be seeing

•  $X<12\$  this inequality might be a representation of "children younger than 12 years old"  

• Whereas  $X\le12$  "children  12 years old or younger "
