  • WAGES – usually refers to pay for work that has been calculated on an hourly or daily basis.

  • SALARY – a fixed amount of pay for a longer period of time than wages. May refer to weekly, monthly, or yearly payment for work.

  • OVERTIME – payment received for time worked beyond regular hours.

    T = WH

  • Total Wages (overtime TO) = (hourly wage (W) x number of hours worked (H)) + overtime pay (O)

    TO = WH + O

  • Overtime Pay (O) = (1.5 x hourly wage (W)) x number of overtime hours (V)

    O = 1.5W(V)

  • Total Salary (S) = salary per pay period (P) x  number of pay periods (N)

 Wages - Example 1

A part-time secretary earns $7.25 per hour. If she works 20 hours, how much will she earn?

         Total Wages = hourly wage x number of hours worked

               Total Wages = WH

               Total Wages = ($7.25)(20)

               Total Wages = $145

10

Wage - Example 2

Joe worked 30 hours and earned $450. Find his hourly wage.

     Total Wages = hourly wage x number of hours worked

                   Total Wages = WH

                  $450 = (hourly wage) (30)

    Divide each side of the equation by 30 to solve for hourly wage.

                 $450/30 = hourly wage

                  $15 = hourly wage
