"To have"

The verb "avoir" is used a lot in the Dr. unit

• You use it to talk about many of your symptoms like "My ears hurt"

• You use it to talk about many of your illnesses like "I have the flu"

How to conjugate the verb "avoir"

• J'ai (I have)

• Tu as (You have)

• Il a (He has)

• Nous avons (We have)

• Vous avez (You have)

• Ils ont (They have)

You used the verb avoir in French 1:

• Tu as quel age?

• J'ai 15 ans.

• Il a les cheveux bruns.

• Elle a les yeux verts.

• J'ai faim.

• J'ai soif.

You will also use "avoir" to talk about body parts that are hurt: J'ai mal + body part

• J'ai mal au nez. (My nose hurts, literally: I have bad at the nose)

• J'ai mal aux yeux. (My eyes hurt, literally: I have bad at the eyes)

• J'ai mal aux jambes. (My legs hurt)

• J'ai mal à l'oreille. (My ear hurts)

• J'ai mal à la dent. (My tooth hurts, I have a toothache,)

Contractions with à:

In between the verb "avoir" and the body part is a form of "à"

à + le =au (J'ai mal au bras) *Use with singular, masculine body part

à + la = à la (J'ai mal à la jambe) * Use with sing., feminine body part

à + l' = à l' (J'ai mal à l'oreille) * Use with sing. body part starting w/ a vowel

à + les= aux (J'ai mal aux pieds) * Use with plural body parts

Negatives: Ne + Verb + Pas

• Remember to make a sentence negative: ne + verb + pas

• Ne will change to n' before a vowel sound in French (a, e, i, o, u, h)

• Example: Je n'ai pas mal au dos. (My back doesn't hurt.)
