A sentence usually begins with a subject (who) followed by a verb (what)

John called.

Some verbs require an object (part of the 'what')

John ate breakfast. / John spoke to Julie.

The most common order of the different elements of a sentence is:

who > what > where > when > how > why

who>what>where>when>how>why

John called earlier to cancel his appointment.

who>what>where>when>how>why

John ate breakfast on the train this morning because he was late.
