What are one-step equations?

A one-step equation is an algebraic equation you can solve in only one step. Once you've solved it, you've found the value of the variable that makes the equation true. To solve one-step equations, we do the inverse (opposite) of whatever operation is being performed on the variable, so we get the variable by itself.

How to solve a one-step equation

  • *Always isolate the variable*

  • Step 1: You use the inverse operation on both sides of the equal sign

  • Step 2: once you have finished solving the inverse operation on both sides of the equal sign. You can find the answer (which is what the quantity of the variable is.) on the side of which is the equation is after the equal sign.

  • Step 3; now you check your work by plug in your answer you solved for where the variable is.

  • If you are confused about everything that is on this slide we will do a live demonstration of how to solve one-step equations. :) You should have enough knowledge though to complete the following questions :)
