British Strategy

  • Wanted to attack Saratoga from three sides.

  • Cut New England off from the rest of the colonies.

  • Captured Fort Ticonderoga but then ran low on supplies and hit some other snags.

American Strategy

By Sept, General Horatio Gates had 6,000 troops ready to fight...but didn't do anything.

Despite having a major advantage, Gates refused to engage them in fighting.


And thus the British began to surround the Americans.

And as a result, the Americans were able to eventually win

Overall Outcome

  • The British plan did not work as Howe was ordered by King George to march south to Philadelphia to capture the Congress..thus reinforcements never arrived at Saratoga.

  • The Americans surrounded the British, inflicting heavy casualties, and eventually the British surrendered on October 17th, 1777.
