Careers and Prestige
Prestige serves as a social function when people choose careers. How a person’s job is perceived can have a huge impact on how they are viewed by others and even themselves.
Sociologist Everett Hughes referred to a person’s job title as “a combination of price-tag and calling card.”
20
Careers and Prestige
We sense that certain jobs are more worthwhile than others, without being able to pinpoint precisely why.
On a surface level, we may associate prestige with power (as with state leaders or CEOs), high salaries (as with celebrities), the service it does, or the intellectual rigor of the job itself.
21
Careers and Prestige
Most people seem to implicitly view prestige as a weighted average of income and education.
However other people seem to have more moralized notions of how much a job helps society and would, for instance, rate doctors high and lawyers low even though both jobs require postgraduate degrees and earn high incomes.
