8

Today we will be doing a gapped text exercise. You will be matching sentences in the gaps of a text.
You will see this type of question in the SPM Reading Paper Part 4
20
TIPS
When doing this type of question, look for words such as definite articles (a,an,the) and pronouns (he,she, they, these) that you think will link into the text.
21
22
Let's take sentences A and E
What do you think the underlined pronouns mean in :
A. What this means is that they should keep their rooms tidy, leave bathrooms clean, pick up after themselves, and wash their dishes once in a while.
E. Interestingly, these are the main reasons parents give for not pressing their children to help at home.
23
Skim the answers once. Read this text for gap #1
Look at the sentence after that. It starts with ...despite this change...
To think logically, the missing gap should be talking about ONE change. The first sentence highlights things that happened in the past.
24
What could be the answer?
...despite this change...
The sentence before the gap stated something that happened in the past. The only possible answer would be sentence D. Nowadays, women have jobs and successful careers, leaving them little time to deal with the large number of tasks that a household requires.
25
Cancel the answer you have already picked.
Which remaining sentences can fit in these gaps?
26

Ex 5. Changing expressions into the correct form
Look at the question below:
Jenny shares a flat with two other students, and they all _____ to keep the place clean and tidy, no one does more or less than anyone else.
The right answer would be (do your fair share)
However, we can't use the pronoun (your) as th subject is Jenny and two other students.
The pronoun should be (their)
The answer then would be: Jenny shares a flat with two other students, and they all do their fair share to keep the place clean and tidy, no one does more or less than anyone else.
