If clause (Past simple), main clause (would/wouldn't + verb(infinitive))

Used to talk about imaginary situations or events and their result.

If people drank tap water, they wouldn't buy bottles.

In the if clause, we normally use were instead of was (singular) but we often use was in spoken English.

If the tap water were safe, I'd drink it.

The difference in meaning of conditional sentences

  • 0 conditional - IS (YRA) If it RAINS, it IS humid outside.

    

  • 1 st conditional - WILL BE (BUS) If it RAINS, it WILL BE humid outside.

  • 2 nd conditional - WOULD BE (BŪTŲ) If it RAINED, it WOULD BE humid outside.
