  • Anything that takes up space is matter

  • In can come in many different forms and in many different ways

  • HEAT AND LIGHT ARE NOT MATTER

Matter

  • Remember, anything that takes up space is matter

  • Matter is made up of small particles that we can't see unless we are using a microscope. Depending on how these particles are arranged tells us what state of matter it is in.

9

Solids

  • In a solid there is a DEFINITE SHAPE AND VOLUME

  • The particles are packed close together and move slowly.

10

Liquids

  • In a liquid there is a NO DEFINITE SHAPE BUT THERE IS A DEFINITE VOLUME.

  • The particles are moving faster, and aren't packed as closely together.

11

Gases

  • In a gas there is NO DEFINITE SHAPE OR VOLUME

  • The particles are moving very quickly and aren't close together at all.

Physical Properties of Matter

  • Matter has physical properties; characteristics of matter that you can observe or measure directly.

  • We use the metric system for measurement. This is grams, meters and liters.

  • Physical properties can be what color something is, but also reflectivity, magnetism, hardness and conductivity.

Describe the item in the picture. What physical properties does it have? Use complete sentences.

14

Mixtures

  • A mixture is a combination of two or more different substances in which the substances keep their identities.

  • In a mixture, each part keep sits own properties.

15

Solutions

  • A mixture that has the same composition throughout because its parts are mixed evenly is called a solution.

  • In a solution it's sometimes hard to get back to the starting items you mixed together.

Physical Change

  • Physical changes are when the MATTER WE STARTED WITH IS THE SAME AT THE END

  • This includes tearing, cutting, chopping, and other such changes.

19

Chemical Change

  • A chemical change is WHEN THE MATTER WE STARTED WITH IS NOT THE SAME AT THE END

  • There is normally a color change, smell, gas, or heat/light that is released with this type of change.
