Gr.3 M5 L14 Concept Development
Objective: Place fractions on a number line with endpoints 0 and 1.
2
So far we have been partitioning (dividing) 2 dimensional shapes into equal parts.
3
By the way, 2 dimensional shapes are shapes that have a length and a width.
4
Now we will partition (divide) lines into equal parts.
5
Open Ended
But what are lines, do your best to define a line without using the word line.
6
A line can be defined as a straight one- dimensional figure that has no thickness and continues endlessly in both directions.
7
Since a line goes on forever on both ends, in order to partition (divide) it, we have to identify its endpoints; a beginning and an end, a "0" and a "1."
8
Multiple Choice
A line with endpoints is known as a line segment, which picture below shows the line segment partitioned into halves
9
Now that the line segment is partitioned into halves, 2 equal parts, we can label each tick mark with the fraction it represents.
10
Multiple Choice
Since the denominator, the number below, is the total amount of equal parts in a whole, we can label the denominator of each fraction. Which image shows the correct denominators.
11
Now lets focus on each fractions' numerator (the number above). Recall that the numerator identifies a specific equal part or parts of the whole.
12
Pretend to be Mario at the start of this course, each numerator represents the number of jumps (equal parts) towards the goal.
13
Fill in the Blanks
Type answer...
14
Since zero 0 jumps have been made towards the goal, the numerator, the number above, is "0."
15
Multiple Choice
What is the numerator for the second fraction?
16
Since Mario has taken one jump (equal part) towards the goal (1 whole), the second fraction is 1/2.
17
Multiple Choice
Finally, what is the numerator of the last fraction?
18
The last fraction is 2 halves (2/2). Notice when the numerator and denominator are the same, that fraction represents 1 whole as well.
19
Multiple Choice
Which image properly partitions and labels a number line into fourths?
20
Fourths
21
Multiple Choice
Which image properly partitions and labels the number line into thirds?
22
thirds
23
Multiple Choice
Which image properly partitions and labels a number line into eights?
24
eighths
25
The concept development level has been completed, now it's time to take on the problem set.
