Idefinite Pronouns

  • An indefinite pronoun does not refer to any specific person, thing, or amount. It is vague and "not definite". Some typical indefinite pronouns are:

  • all, another, any, anybody/anyone, anything, each, everybody/everyone, everything, few, many, nobody, none, one, several, some, somebody/someone

However, some of them can be singular in one context and plural in another. 

To determine whether to use a singular or plural verb with an indefinite pronoun that can be, either way, check the prepositional phrase that typically follows the pronoun.

Relative Pronoun

  • When a relative pronoun (who,which,whom.that) is a subject,that is treated as if ot has the same number as its antecedent.Thefore,the verb agrees with the antecedent.

  • Mrs Pratt, who is very kind, is my teacher.

  • The person that phoned me last night is my teacher.

Make sure that you have directly identified the antecedent before you decide which verb to use.

  • My cousin is one of those people who love to eat pizza.

  • The student who asks a lot of questions is a valuable asset to a class.
