We use words called conjunctions, like , because, although, if, unless, despite, However and So to join two parts of sentences.

Conjunctions can be used to:

  • Give more information.

  • Give alternatives.

  • Give reasons.

  • Give results.

  • Give unexpected information.

Because

(It can be used, either at the begining of the sentence or at the end)

Example: Because I didn´t have enough time, I couldn't go out with my friends. / I couldn't go out with my friends because I didn't have time.


Spanish: Porque

Although

Example: Allthough he is a bit odd, I like him


Spanish: A pesar de que, Aunque

Example: I don't know if they'll like my cooking


Spanish: si...

Unless

Example: Unless you arrive early in the morning, the wait for breakfast can be about an hour


Spanish: A no ser que.

Despite / In spite of...

Example: She was the one who paid the rent, despite having a much lower income.


Spanish: A pesar de...

Example: I like listening to music; however, I don't like going to concerts.


Spanish: Sin embargo
