Beginning Rhythms

  • Whole Note - 4 Beats

  • Whole Rest - 4 Beats

  • Half Note - 2 Beats

  • Half Rest - 2 Beats

  • Quarter Note - 1 Beat

  • Quarter Rest - 1 Beat

How to count beginning rhythms

All of these rhythms last anywhere from 1 beat to 4 beats.

Dividing the Beat

The next two notes will divide the beat in half and into fourths.

Eighth Note

  • Seen by itself, or grouped in 2,3,or4

  • Each eighth note is 1/2 the lengnth of a beat

  • It is usually counted with a number on the 1st note, and the word "and" or a & sign on the second

Sixteenth Notes

  • Looks very similar to an eighth note but has 2 flags or beams

  • The sixteenth note divides the beat into fourths

  • You count them with the 1st note being a number followed by " e & a" on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th notes
