Europe's Human Geography

Learning intentions:

- To describe the population density of countries

- To use mathematical skills accurately

- To use data to compare countries in Europe

Slide image

12

What is human geography?

  • Human geography is about understanding the ways people live, the things people do, and the ways they interact with the environment:

  • Urban geography - studying towns and cities and pollution

  • Cultural geography - studying different cultures and ways of life

  • Economic geography - Studying money, jobs and inequality

  • Political geography - studying how countries are run

  • Development geography - studying wealth and quality of life

  • Medical geography - studying the control and spread of diseases

13

The population geography of Europe

  • Population geography looks at where people live in the world

  • It is useful for comparing different countries

  • Some countries have lots of people living in small areas

  • Some countries have a few people living in massive areas

18

Population density

  • Some countries are packed full of people, whilst others have plenty of space to spread out

  • Densely populated countries have many people in a small areas

  • Sparsely populated countries have few people in large areas

  • Most countries in Europe are packed full of people, mostly living in towns and cities

19

Areas with lots of people in a small area are densely populated / Few people in an area means it is sparsely populated

20

Multiple Choice

Lots of people in a small area means it is...

1

Densely populated

2

Sparsely populated

Question image

Use compass directions to describe the population density of Europe (where are its densest and sparsest populations?)

23

Open Ended

Why might knowing how densely populated a place is be useful?

24

Why is population density important?

  • It tells us if people have enough room to live healthily.

  • It tells us about the type of homes people live in (e.g. detached houses or high-rise apartments).

  • It tells us how many services (e.g. hospitals, dentists, buses) and resources (e.g. water, food, electricity) are needed.

Slide image

25

Calculating population density

  • To work out a country's population density we need to do some basic maths - yay!

  • Population density = the number of people divided by the area they live in (measured in km2)

  • So if 20 people live in 20m2... 20/20 = 1 person/km2

Slide image

26

Calculating the population density of Europe

  • Europe's population is around 740 million people

  • The area of Europe is around 10 million km2

  • Population / area = population density

  • 740m / 10m = 74 people per km2

27

Open Ended

What is the population density of Iceland?

Population = 300,000

Area = 100,000 km2

28

Open Ended

What is the population density of Gibraltar?

Population = 33,000

Area = 10 km2

29

Multiple Choice

What is the population density of Bulgaria?

Population = 7 million

Area = 100,000 km2

1

7 P/Km2

2

70 P/Km2

3

700 P/Km2

30

Multiple Choice

What is the population density of Belarus?

Population = 10 million

Area = 200,000 km2

1

5 P/Km2

2

50 P/Km2

3

500 P/Km2

31

Why else is population geography useful?

  • We can ask people questions about their ethicity, religion and habits to compare different places

  • We can find patterns and differences between countries and within countries

  • This can help us to understand other people and cultures better
