Self-Introduction

In Spanish "we call ourselves" because our IDENTITY belongs to us. It's a cultural perspective ! This is the reason why, translations do not work properly. Therefore, do not use GOOGLE TRANSLATE!

8

¿ Cómo te llamas?

  • Me llamo (add your 1st name)

  • Me llamo María

  • Me llamo Guillermo.

9

If you really want to ask "What is your name in Spanish, it would be ¿Cuál es tu nombre?

And the answer would be "mi nombre es ...." which means "My name is .....".

Be aware, that's not really Spanish because this is the way to think in English not in Spanish. Again it's a cultural perspective !

10

Multiple Choice

In Spanish the AUTHENTIC CULTURAL WAY to ask a name to someone would be...

12

In Spanish, all the words have a gender

  • masculine

  • feminine

13

In order to remember the genders, we need to think BOY versus GIRL

  • un chicO, the O ending tells you it's masculine

  • una chicA, the A ending tells you it's feminine

  • at 99% this rules is working !!!!

  • I said at 99% because there is 1% of the words that follows their own rule when it comes to determine whether or not a word is feminine or masculine.

14

For people in English, we do have a gender

  • a girl, a woman, it's feminine

  • a boy, a man, it's masculine

  • About PEOPLE, in English and in Spanish it's the same rule, the biological gender determines the gender.

  • For words which are objects, their ending in O or A will help you to determine the gender of the objects: O for chico (masculine), A for chica feminine. (Remember chico: boy, chica: girl).

How are you today ?

¿ Cómo estás hoy ?

21

In Spanish, we have formal and informal you

  • Formal are for adults you don't know like a manager, a lady at church, a teacher ....

  • INFORMAL are for your family and your friends, for teenagers and kids you don't know well.

  • Again it's a cultural perspective ! In English you are only using YOU. It does not matter who you are talking to.... SORRY impossible in Spanish !!!!!!

22

As a result,

  • ¿ Cómo te llamas?

  • versus

  • ¿ Cómo se llama usted?

  • On the top, it's informal. On the bottom, it's the formal way for asking the name of a lady that you are seeing at church every Sunday !
