There are global cultural phenomena, and then there is “Gangnam Style.” The 2012 viral video for that Korean pop song racked up over 1 billion views on YouTube, becoming the first video to do so. Gangnam Style is performed by an artist in South Korea named Psy. The song is named for an expensive neighborhood in Seoul, South Korea and Psy makes fun of how the wealthy there spend their money. The video’s flashy style and galloping, invisible-horse dance have inspired hundreds of copies, from students attending West Point in New York to prisoners in the country of the Philippines.

In the 1940’s and 1950’s many immigrants moved from the Caribbean Islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico to New York (a state in the USA). These immigrants continued to play the music of their former country; a type called salsa. Salsa music became very popular and many people in New York listened to salsa music along with their own music. It is just one of many different types of cultural music you can hear on the streets of New York.
