2

Fill in the Blank

What property would we use here to simplify this?

 3x(2x24)3x\left(2x^2-4\right)

3

What if we have

 (5x9)(5x7)\left(5x-9\right)\left(5x-7\right)  ? There are 2 methods

  • Distribute:  5x(5x7)  25x235x5x\left(5x-7\right)\ \rightarrow\ 25x^2-35x

  • Distribute:  9(5x7)  45x+63-9\left(5x-7\right)\ \rightarrow\ -45x+63

  • Can we combine like terms?

  •  25x280x+6325x^2-80x+63

4

Multiple Choice

Practice

 (3x7)(4x+2)\left(3x-7\right)\left(4x+2\right)

1

 7x2+28x6x+147x^2+28x-6x+14

2

 12x222x1412x^2-22x-14

3

 12x2+6x28x+1412x^2+6x-28x+14

5

The other method - FOIL

 (5x9)(5x7)\left(5x-9\right)\left(5x-7\right)

  • F - First:  (5x)(5x)\left(5x\right)\left(5x\right)

  • O - Outside:  (5x)(7)\left(5x\right)\left(-7\right)

  • I - Inside:  (9)(5x)\left(-9\right)\left(5x\right)

  • L - Last:  (9)(7)\left(-9\right)\left(-7\right)

6

Fill in the Blank

 (3x+4)(x6)3x2\left(3x+4\right)\left(x-6\right)\rightarrow3x^2  ____  24-24

7

Poll

(9x+2y)2\left(9x+2y\right)^2  What do we do here?

 81x2+4y281x^2+4y^2

 (9x+2y)(9x+2y)\left(9x+2y\right)\left(9x+2y\right)  , then FOIL

 (11xy)2\left(11xy\right)^2

8

Multiple Choice

 (5ab2)2\left(5ab-2\right)^2

Practice:

1

 25ab2+20ab425ab^2+20ab-4

2

 25ab10ab10ab+425ab-10ab-10ab+4

3

 25ab220ab+425ab^2-20ab+4

9

Poll

 (4m2)(4m2+5mn+3n2)\left(4m-2\right)\left(4m^2+5mn+3n^2\right)

Can we FOIL this, or just use the distributive property?

FOIL

Distribute

10

 (4m2)(4m2+5mn+3n2)\left(4m-2\right)\left(4m^2+5mn+3n^2\right)

  •  4m(4m2+5mn+3n2)4m\left(4m^2+5mn+3n^2\right)

  •  2(4m2+5mn+3n2)-2\left(4m^2+5mn+3n^2\right)
