7

When we ADD/SUBTRACT polynomials , we add coefficients (number in front of variable) and the variable comes along for the ride. We do not add exponents!!!

Multiple Choice

When we subtract polynomials, you must distribute the negative sign!! (8x + 3) - (5x - 4) becomes..... 8x + 3 - 5x + 4.............the correct answer is?

1

3x + 7

2

3x - 1

Degree of a polynomial

You look at each term. Find the degree of each monomial. The degree of the polynomial is the highest degree of the monomial.

EX) 5x2y + 4x - 6

5x2y has a degree of 3 (add exponents of variables)

4x has a degree of 1

-6 has a degree of 0

The highest degree of these three monomials is 3. 3 is the degree of the polynomial.
