Notes on Irregular Verbs

  • Some irregular verbs share the same infinitive, past, and past participle forms.

  • Some irregular verbs don't share any of the same forms.

  • Some share the same past simple and past participle form but not the same infinitive form.

  • Some irregular verbs share the same infinitive and past simple form but not the past participle form.

  • BUT ALL IRREGULAR VERBS SHARE ONE THING IN COMMON.................

They don't follow the normal rules!!!

Normal rules follow the pattern of adding -d, -ed, or -ied to create past simple and past participle forms.

Begin

  • Infinitive Form= begin/ to begin

  • Example: I want to begin a race.

  • Past Simple Form= began

  • Example: I began a race.

  • Past Participle: begun

  • Example: I had begun a race.

  • This follows the second note that none of the forms are the same.

Awake

  • Infinitive Form= awake/ to awake

  • Example: I wanted to awake at 5am.

  • Past Simple Form= awoke

  • Example: I awoke at 5am.

  • Past Participle: awoken

  • Example: I had awoken at 5am.

  • This also follows the second note.

Bite

  • Infinitive Form: bite/ to bite

  • Example: I bite my pickle.

  • Past Simple Form: bit

  • Example: I bit my pickle.

  • Past Participle: bitten

  • Example: I have bitten my pickle.

Bleed

  • Infinitive Form= bleed/ to bleed

  • Example: They bleed green.

  • Past Simple= bled

  • Example: They bled green.

  • Past Participle= bled

  • Example: They had bled green.

Burst

  • Infinitive Form= burst/ to burst

  • Example: The grass caused the bubble to burst.

  • Past Simple Form= burst

  • Example: The bubble burst.

  • Past Participle= burst

  • Example: The bubble has burst.

  • Do you notice how all of these are the same form?

  • Example: She wanted to beat him in the race.
