Teacher's Writing Prompt

Imagine that you have been asked to write an informational essay about the platypus. One of your guiding research questions is: What qualities does a platypus need to survive in the wild? Read and take notes from at least two sources to answer this question. List the sources of your information.

3

Big idea 1: Food

  • Diet of the Platypus consists mainly of the benthic invertebrates, particularly the insect larvae. (AM)

  • The platypus is common in waterways of eastern Australia, where it generally feeds on bottom-dwelling invertebrates (B)

  • The senses of sight, smell, and hearing are essentially shut down while the platypus is submerged to feed (B)

4

Make each piece of evidence into a sentence

Should I paraphrase the evidence or use a direct quote?

5

The platypus has an interesting and exotic way of gaining energy.

  • Australian Museum says, "Diet of the Platypus consists mainly of the benthic invertebrates, particularly the insect larvae."

  • The platypus eats bottom dwellers, which is a fancy way of saying it scavenges.

  • Britannica also gives information about how the platypus gets food, saying, "The senses of sight, smell, and hearing are essentially shut down while the platypus is submerged to feed."

6

Now put all the information into a Paragraph...

The platypus has an interesting and exotic way of gaining energy. Australian Museum says, "Diet of the Platypus consists mainly of the benthic invertebrates, particularly the insect larvae." The platypus eats bottom dwellers, which is a fancy way of saying it scavenges. Britannica also gives information about how the platypus gets food, saying, "The senses of sight, smell, and hearing are essentially shut down while the platypus is submerged to feed." This platypus sure knows how to get it's food, or energy, for swimming!

7

Swimming

  • The swimming action is smooth, and when the Platypus dives the back is (AM)

  • This shy creature forages most actively from dusk to dawn, (B)

  • unique electromechanical system of electroreceptors and touch receptors that allow it to navigate perfectly underwater (B)

8

One thing we know for sure, the platypus enjoys swimming, and it's good at it!

  • When looking at information from Australian Museum, we can learn how the platypus dives and swims in a smooth manner.

  • Britannica also speaks of the swimming platypus, saying that it uses it's expert swimming to scavenge or forage for food.

  • Britannica also states, "the unique electromechanical system of electroreceptors and touch receptors allow it to navigate perfectly underwater."
