What is Dialogue
Dialogue is a conversation where two or more characters are talking.

There are two types of dialogue.
Internal Dialogue
and
External Dialogue

An Example of External and Internal Dialogue
External- Riley is having a conversation with her mother and father.
Internal- Joy, Anger, Sadness, Disgust, and Fear are inside all of the character's minds.

It is a spoken conversation between two or more characters.
When writing with external dialogue, there is a formula.

An Example: Writing with External Dialogue
The Scenario: Darius finds a 20 dollar bill on the ground. He picks it up and puts in his pocket. Kai sees him and tells him how wrong he is for keeping the money.
Create and External Dialogue for the scenario.
Darius said out loud with glee, "Yes, I found 20 bucks. Now, I have enough money for food and ice cream." Kai angrily responds, "You should not keep the money because it does not belong to you."

When using External Dialogue, you must have a tag or tell who said it.
There are many ways to say said. On the next slide, you are going to write using External Dialogue. Try to use a synonym for "said."

The Purpose of Internal Dialogue
Internal dialogue is an opportunity to get inside the character’s head, allowing the reader to experience the character’s innermost thought patterns, point of view, and opinions.

Internal Dialogue
Internal Dialogue is used by authors to indicate what a character is thinking.
In the clip, Ralphie's Internal Dialogue or thinking is in a man's voice.

Internal Dialogue
When using Internal Dialogue, the writer tells what the character is thinking. To use Dialogue you must be able to recognize key words that show the thoughts and beliefs of a character.
Using Internal Dialogue does not require quotations marks because it is not being said out loud.
Sometimes Internal Dialogue is in italics, but it is not required.

Internal Dialogue
Internal Dialogue comes in many forms.
Sometimes it's called the inner voice or internal monologue.
Simply put: you can have thoughts and/or conversations in your head which can be included in your writing.

An example of Internal Dialogue
Scenario: Ali wanted to go to the movies, but the movies are not open during the pandemic.
I believe that the movie theaters should be open because people can sit six feet apart. I expect that the theaters will be open next year.
The words "believe" and "expect" are words show the character is thinking.
